Hemidesmosomes are mainly called as anchoring junctions between the basal lamina and the bases of epithelial cells. Ultrastructurally, they resemble a single-sided desmosome, anchored on one side to the plasma membrane, and on the other to the adjacent collagen fibrils and basal lamina. Hemidesmosomes use integrins as their adhesion molecules.

2- they are simmilar to desmosomes when viewed under electron microscopy .,
3- desmosomes link two cells together but hemidesmosomes link 1 cell to the extracellular matrix .
4- they are asymmetrical in nature and are found in epithellial cells .
