Pepsin is expressed as a zymogen called pepsinogen, whose primary structure has an additional 44 amino acids. In the stomach, chief cells release pepsinogen. Thiszymogen is activated by hydrochloric acid (HCl), which is released from parietalcells in the stomach lining.
