A cell upto 8 celled stage is an embryonic stem cell- meaning it can differentiate into whole organism. Whereas a cell from blastula is also an embryonic stem cell- it is able to differentiate into many types of cells but not into whole organism.
As embryo development progresses to the 8-cell stage and beyond depending on the species, the individual blastomeres that comprise the embryo gradually lose their totipotency.
