Chloride shift(also known as the Hamburgers shift or Hamburger's phenomenon, named afterHartog Jakob Hamburger) is a process which occurs in acardiovascular system and refers to the exchange ofbicarbonate(HCO3-) andchloride(Cl-) across the membrane ofred blood cells(RBCs).
