The seed of Pinus consists of tissues representing three generations:
1. The testa, tegmen and the nucellar cap represent the parts of the old sporophyte, the Pinus tree.
2. The endosperm surrounding the embryo represents the female gametophyte.
3. The embryo represents the dormant future sporophyte.
