Bohr Effect statesthat haemoglobin’s oxygen binding affinity is inversely related both to acidity and to the concentration of carbon dioxide. That is to say, a decrease in bloodpHwhich leads to an increase in blood CO2concentration will result in haemoglobin proteins releasing their loads of oxygen. Conversely, a decrease in carbon dioxide provokes an increase in pH, which results in haemoglobin picking up more oxygen. Since carbon dioxide reacts with water to formcarbonic acid, an increase in CO2results in a decrease in blood pH.
