Determine the wavelength of sodium sorcre using mechelsons interferometer Determine the wavelength of sodium sorcre using mechelsons interferometer
Dear student Michelson interferometer has been used to determinethe wavelength of the green emission line from a mercury lamp. Themeasured wavelength was 549.0(9)nm. Using the knownwavelength of the same line, 546.074nm, the reduction lever of theinterferometer was found to reduce the micrometer travel by a ratioof 5.026(8):1, rather than the quoted 5:1. Using this calibratedreduction ratio, the average wavelength of the yellow sodiumdoublet was determined to be 589.3(10)nm and the splitting betweenthe lines forming the doublet was 0.5971(5)nm. These are inexcellent agreement with the literature values of 589.294nm and0.5974nm, respectively.
