Sign convention means some predefined rules which must be followed!
For example, charge on an electron is taken as negative whereas on a proton it it positive!

Sign convention is done acc. to location on X-Y plane. For right hand side (+X) and upward (+Y) positive sign is given while for LHS (-X) and downward (-Y) negative sign is given.
