Dear student,

In addition, there are two conventional ways to specify magnification, areal and lineal.

10x lineal magnification means that each dimension appears ten times larger, whereas 10x area magnification means the apparent area of the magnified image is ten times the real area.

So 10x lineal is the same as 100x areal, and 10x areal is the same as (Square root of 10)x lineal -- thee and small change.

Hand lenses and children's microscopes tend to be rated in areal magnification. Most other optical gear is rated in lineal magnification.
