how can a virtual image be photographed by a camera ?

 If you place the camera at the true position of the virtual image, there will be nothing there, because the light rays do not actually exist there.

This is opposed to a real image, where a camera placed at the position of the real image will see it, because the light rays actually pass through that spot.
