In this image , direction of electric field vector is along y axis and direction of magnetic field is along x axis . But if we write direction of electric field vector and magnetic field vector as along x and y axis respectively, would it be correct? Or is it compulsory that when a wave propagates along z axis, the directions have to be those that are shown in the figure?

Dear student
This is electromagnetic waves.
Direction of magnetic field is along x axis and electric field is along y axis only.
But wave will propagate in z directon.
You will get more clearity on this when you will study Electroagnetics in your Bachelors .
There we represent it by a wave equation, In which the z direction is determined,
Just like SHM.
So, No need to bother.
Good Luck
