Can a wave transverse in a perfectly elastic string?
A transverse wave travels along an ideal string(perfectly elastic string). Here the oscillation is in a transverse direction and the component of acceleration parallel to the x-axis is zero. Hence the component of the net force parallel to the x-axis also zeros.
Considering a small part of the string that make q1 and q2 w.r.t x axis and T1 and T2 the tensions at the end then
T1cosq1 – T2cosq2= 0 and the wave eqn for the string
Hope you are now clear now.
