note that although saurabhs answer a=10 is correct as per the options but his statement “all values of a are acceptable” is wrong. for instance, there exists no solution for a=0. in fact, there is no solution for a less than 1. the fundamental mistake in saurabhs solution is that he forgot to consider the fact that cosx has got to lie in [-1, 1]. even his methodology is flawed. the correct method would be ot first let y= cosx and then using the results from the following link:
