Why is the freezer put above the cooling chamber in refrigerator?

This is based on the principle of convection currents. What happens is that due to the cooling, the air becomes denser and moves downward. This creates a partial vacuum above, which is replaced by the warmer air, which also gets cooled by the unit. If it was placed anywhere else, it would be less effective, and the cooling would less well distributed
