Friction between two sliding surfaces will increase the temperature of both the surfaces. The increase of temperature will cause the increase of thermal energy of the two surfaces and this energy will spread inside the surface. Therefore the total entropy increases when work is converted into heat by friction between two surfaces.
Energy is a conserved quantity, while entropy is a quantity that can and generally does increase. Entropy is often associated with disorder and the second law of thermodynamics is sometimes cast as a statement that the disorder of a closed system always increases. From above observation we know that, the total entropy increases when work is converted into heat by friction between two surfaces. This signifies that, the increase in disorder, since entropy measures the total disorder of the system. Thus disorder of an isolated system never decreases.
