Transition metal elements i.e. the d-block elements shows irregularities in their electronic configurations, for example, chromium has a 4s13d5 electronic configuration rather than the 4s23d4 configuration as it should be according to aufbau principle, similarly, copper is having 4s13d10 rather than 4s23d9. This kind of anomalies can be attributed to the extra stability associated with half-filled and completely filled sub-shells. Moreover, the ns and (n − 1)d sub-shells of d-block elements are having similar energy, hence even relatively small effects are enough to introduce apparently anomalous electron configurations.
