consider two atoms A and B. where A is a cation and B is an anion.covalent and ionic character are the two extremes.in case of ionic character there is a complete separation of charge.the positive ion attracts the electron on the negative ion and at the same time it repels the nucleus thus weakening the polarizing power.thus weaker the polarizing power more the ionic character.

thanks and regards
