Dear student
When the calomel electrode acts as the cathode, mercury ions are discharged at the electrode. More calomel passes into the solution. Hence, there is an increase in the concentration of chloride ions.
Calomel electrode has the ease of oxidation and reduction reactions. - Again a calomel electrode is a practical electrode than a Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE).
