At high pressure, the mean free path of electrons is quite low. The electrons don`t get enough time to get accelerated. If the electrons don`t accelerate for long, they can`t gain the high velocity or kinetic energy that is required to ionize other atoms.2 ans. When the gas pressure is low (but not too low), the electrons get enough time (or distance) to accelerate. By the time they collide with an atom, they have gained enough kinetic energy from the electric field to ionize other atoms. Even though there are not many atoms from which electrons can be obtained compared to a gas at high pressure, there is more than enough to produce a measurable current.
