Why do people put salt on icy roads?

Icy road has ice on the road,it blocks the traffic system severely.Addition of salt lowers the melting point of water according to depression in freezing point theory.When salt is added it depresses the freezing point of water as the concentration of pure solvent is being affected with the addition of salt.
