Copper matte contains FeS and Cu2S.
Copper matte is put in silica lined converter to remove the remaining FeO and FeS present in the matte as slag (FeSiO3) and Cu2S is converted into metallic copper. Then a hot air blast is blown. This can be understood by the following reactions :
                               
                                                FeS + O2 --->  FeO +SO2
                                                          FeO + SiO2  ----> FeSiO3
                                                           Cu2S + O2 ----->Cu2O + SO2
                                                 Cu2S + Cu2O ----> Cu + SO2
