@ prashant
The oxidation number of Cl is always -1 when it's not in diatomic form (Cl2).
so, here also the oxidation number is -1 in the case of cl .
this compound , oxidation number calculation is not streight forward beacuse O can create diffrent types of bond at diffrent moments , so, it have diffrent composition .

The Oxidation Number of Cl in HOCl is +1.
It can be calculated as below:
Total Charge on Molecule is Zero(0). Therefore,
0 = + 1 (for Hydrogen) – 2 (for Oxygen) + X (for Chlorine)
0 = – 1 + X
X = + 1
Therefore, Oxidation Number of Chlorine in HOCl is +1.

And, it is a myth that Cl always has -1 Oxidation Number. For eg. in HClO4 Oxidation Number of Cl is +7.

Oxygen being more electronegative than Cl, oxygen retains its oxidation stat of -2. So, it mans that Chlorine will have an oxidation state of +1 in this compound.
