Oxidation state shows the total number of electrons which have been removed from an element (a positive oxidation state) or added to an element (a negative oxidation state) to get to its present state.Ex. For Cu2+, oxidation number is 2 while for F-, it is 1.Inert or Nobel Gases have complete filled valence shell making them very stable.Hence they usually exhibit oxidation number zero.
