The oxidation number of cobalt in K[Co(CO)4] is
[Co(CO)4]^-1
the oxidation state of CO is 0 .
therefore its oxidation number is x + 4*0 =-1
x=-1

Oxidation state is Metal + Ligand=Remaining charge X +0 =-1 so X=Metal=-1 NOTE: oxidation state of (co) is zero.
