Dear student 
The acidity and basicity of the solution is defined in terms of the pH of the solution. If the pH is less than 7, then it is acidic, if it is more than 7, then it is basic and if it is equal to 7, then it is neutral. pH is defined as negative of logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration. More the hydrogen ion concentration, less is the pH and more is the acidity of the solution. If the solution is basic, then hydrogen ion concentration is less and hydroxyl ion concentration is more and thus pH is more than 7. I hope this explains the equation, pH = -log[H+].
