In peroxide linkage, how is the oxidation number of O -1? For example, if we draw the structure of H 2 SO 5 , we see that two oxygen atoms are linked with each other by a single bond. But how does that make its oxidation number -1?

Okh you have a valid reason to come across a doubt here as you just said two oxygen are linked with each other by a single bond but Satviki let me tell you a very important thing when oxygen is bonded to oxygen the oxidation state conferred to it is zero due to this linkage because EN of both the atoms is same as both are same atoms so that leaves us with the other side to which oxygen is attached which confers it -1 oxidation state exclusively
