In an ostwald walker experiment dry air was first blown through a solution of atomic mass 278 in 150 gram of water and then also through pure water. the loss in mass of water was found to be 0. 0827 gram while the mass of water absorbed in sulphuric acid wash 3. 317 gram. Calculate the amount of solute.

Wt of water =150 g

Mol. wt. of solute =278 g

From Ostwald-Walker experiment,

Loss of weight of solution  Ps

Loss in weight of solvent (P0Ps)

Gain in weight of H2SO4 P0

So, Gain in weight of H2SO4Loss in weight of solvent=P0P0Ps=3.3170.0827

Also, Relative lowering of vapour pressure =P0P0Ps=Xsolute=3.3170.0827

150wt/278×18=3.3170.0827

Wt=57.76 g
