If in a CsCl crystal Cl atoms are at corners and Cs atom are located at end centre of the crystal then what will be the distance between two nearby Cs and Cl ions? Density of crystal is 3.97 gm/cm3. Molar mass of Cs and Cl is 133 and 35.5 gm/mol respectively.

Density of crystal lattice is given by:

where, n: no of atom in unit cell
M: Molar mass of the compound
a : distance between two nearby atom
Na: Avogadro No.

Given: Z = 3.97 gm/cm3
Molar mass = 133+35.5 = 168.5 gm/mol
Na= 6.022 x 1023 mole-1
n = 2 ( for end centered cubic lattice)

On solving we get, a = 5.204 x 10-8 cm
