in transition metal the oxidation state vary by on but in other compound it vary by 2 or 3.ex-Fe+2 and Fe+3 ,non transition element it is generally +3,+5

in transition element the transition element the oxidation state vary by +1 to the highest oxidation state by the removal of all its valence electron
