Potassium dichromate is an strong oxidising agent.It is used as a primary standard in volumetric analysis.
The oxidising action of potassium dichromate in acidic medium is given as-
Cr₂O₇²- + 14H⁺+ 6e^- ----------------> 2Cr³⁺+ 7H₂O
It oxidises iron(II) salts to iron(III)
Cr₂O₇^_2-+ 14H⁺ + 6Fe²⁺ ---------------> 2Cr³⁺ + 6Fe³⁺ + 7H₂O
