Within the elastic limits the ratio between the longitudinal stress and longitudinal stain is Young's Modulus.

Young's Modulus Y = Longitudinal Stress/Longitudinal Strain
Longitudinal stress = Force/Area and
Longitudinal strain = Change in length/Original length
Thus unit of Y is Pascal(Pa) or Nm–2

its the ratio of longitudinal stress to longitudinal strain. i.e, young`s modulus =[f/a]/[e/l] = [FL] / [Ae] note, both stress and strain are longitudinal.
