The charge-coupled device (CCD) is a two-dimensional array ofseveral million small photodiode detectors. With a CCD, a widerange of wavelengths that emerge from a polychromator are detectedsimultaneously, thus eliminating the need to measure light intensityone narrow wavelength range at a time. CCD detectors are theimaging devices in digital cameras, but are also used widely in spectroscopy to measure absorption, emission, and Ramanscattering. In Raman microscopy, a CCD detector can be used in avariation of the technique known as Raman imaging: a special opticalfilter allows only one Stokes line to reach the two-dimensionaldetector, which then contains a map of the distribution of theintensity of that line in the illuminated area.
