In the rock salt structure Na+ and Cl– ions are alternatively arranged such that Cl– ion is surrounded by six NA+ ions and similarly Na+ ion is surrounded by six chloride ions. In other words the ions are capable of achieving a co-ordination number of 6.
The given figure clearly illustrates the unit cell structure of NaCl with 14 Cl– and 13 Na+ ions. Thus, there are four NaCl molecules per unit cell.
There are Cl-ions at the positions 0,0,0; 1/2,1/2,0; 1/2,0,1/2; and 0,1/2,1/2. .
There are Na+ions at the positions 1/2,1/2,1/2; 1/2,0,0; 0,1/2,0; and 0,0,1/2.
