  • X is acetaldehyde and  Y is acetic acid  
  • On aldol condensation it will give 2-butenal
  •  
CH3CHO + CrO3 ---> CH3COOH
CH3CHO + I2/NaOH----> CHI3
CH3CHO +HCN----->CH3CH(OH)CN
CH3CH(OH)CN + H2O----> CH3CH(OH)COOH
