Why is CdSO4.8/3H2o solidadded to the cell?

This is weston standard cadmium cell.
When the cell operates the following reaction occurs at the electrode
at negative electrode
Cd(s) ---Cd+2 +2e-
at positive electrode
Hg2SO4 +2e- ----->2Hg +SO4 ^2-
Both the electrode are sprinkled with some crystals of solid CdSO4.8/3H2O
CdSO4.8/3H2o solid added to the cell is to keep the electrolyte saturated at all temperature.
