How do we know the no. of replaceable hydroxyl and hydronium groups in an acid or a base?how do we know the acidity and basicity of a base and an acid respectively?

Dear Menka,

All those  hydroxyl and hydroxide ions which are not in conjugation with other atoms are replacabe and total no of replacable ions give the acidity or basicitu.

Best Of luck

actually these r automatically reminded to us when go through chapters regarding acid bases, redox etc. u can make a list n start learning them. it comes by practise.

if we know the formula of the we can know about the basicity.

for oxoacids(both having O n H compound.)

ex. H3PO2 by looking we ant say that basicity is +3 as there r 3Hs. "only H bonded with P as OH becomes H+. "its formula has only 1 OH bond with P so basicity +1.(other O is doubly bonded with P)

eg for H2SO4 basicity= +2 as all these H r present as OH in the formula.

for simple compounds like HI,HCL etc it is generally no of H atoms.

all the best !!!
