The reactions are as follows:
CO + 1/2O2 → CO2,
N2 + O2→ 2NO.
Or
1/2N2 + 1/2O2→ NO ------(1)
Now, out of 7 ml of oxygen, half of the oxygen will be used by CO to produce one mole of CO2 and half will be used by N2 to form one mole of NO.Therefore, volume of O2 used by N2 is 7/2 ml.
According to the equation (1),
½ mole of N2 reacts with ½ mole of O2 to give one mole of NO.Therefore, same volume of N2 and O2 react to form NO.
Hence, the volume of N2 is 7/2 ml.
