Dear student 
In electrophilic aromatic substitution the electron releasing group activate the benzene ring and substitution takes place as o,p-position of the substituent. The activating effect is due to the electron releasing group as it increases the electron density at o, and p-position.
Electron withdrawing groups are deactivating because it pulls the electron of ring towards itself leaving it with lesser electron density.hence it is not suitable for attack of electrophile and if any how substitution takes place it goes to meta position.
As shown in diagram the electron density is decreases at o and p so substitution takes place at meta position. 
Nitrobenzene is deactivating as it carry electron withdrawing nitro group,
