Why lower normal alkanes are not sulphonared?

The mechanism for sulphonation is radical mechanism and for that the tertiary or branched alkyl radicals are more stable and so undergoes sulfonation.
But for lower normal alkanes it is not favoured and hence these alkanes don’t show this reaction in normal condition although they undergo sulfonation in vapour phase
