Aniline in presence of strong acids mainly gives the m-substituted product although aniline is o,p-directing in aq. solution. It is because in anilinium ion lone pair of electrons gets involved in formation of bond with hydrogen because of which the molecule will not exert electromeric or mesomeric effect rather than it will exert a stong – I effect due to the presence of a positive charge to give mainly m-substituted product. Thus we can say that anilinium ion is m-directing due to – I effect.
