Aldol condensation requires alpha Hydrogen and not alpha Carbon because in order to proceed with the reaction the reagent( aq NaOH ) has to abstract proton and form Carbanion.
The product obtained isAnaldol condensationis β-hydroxyaldehyde or β-hydroxyketone, followed by a dehydration to give a conjugated enone.
