Ring like structure is formed in the middle of dz2 because of the shape of dz2 orbital.
The dz2 orbital is shaped like a single dumbbell along the z axis, with a donu like ring around the x- y plane.
Hence it is also called donut shaped orbital. Basically it is probablity of finding electron .
