When t -butanol and n -butanol are separately treated with a few drops of dilute KMnO base 4, in one case only the purple colour disappears and a brown precipitate is formed. Which of the two alcohols gives the above reaction and what is the brown precipitate ?

n-Butanol gives the following reaction in which the purple colour of KMnO base 4 changes to brown. Tert-Alcohol are not oxidisable easily, hence purple colour of KMnO base 4 remains same.

C base 2H base 5OH + 4I base 2 + 6NaOH

?CHI base 3 ? + 5Nal + HCOONa + 5H base 2O
