When hx is added to alkynes, why do geminal alkylhallides form and why not vicinal? Explain with mechanism

because  the addition of  HX in unsaturated compounds like alkene and alkyne follows the MARKONIKOV’S rule . i.e most electronegative atom will be added to the unsaturated carbon containing less no,  hydrogen atoms . here the most electronegative among H and X  ,,    is X ,, therfore gem type is always fomed as a major product
