Cl2 reacts with alkanes simply by replacing hydrogen. no logic whatsoever.cl2 undergoes homolytic fission.e,g, CH3-CH3 + Cl2 gives CH3-CH2-ClIt can also give us CH3-CHCl2n Cl-CH2-CHCl2N many other possibilities r there of getting other products.Let us consider the first one where only one His replaced by Cl, this is called a monochloro derivative and is studied widely.No. Of monochloro derivatives formed depend upon the kinds of H atoms present in an alkane.e,g, primary, secondary, tertiary, etcif u take ethane, it gives only one monochloro derivatives because all H atoms are primary.Take 2-methyl butane...it gives 4 monochloro derivatives because it has 4 types of H atoms.... primary, secondary, tertiary n primary but a special one because this primary differs from simple primary in the respect that it is bonded to secondary carbon while the other primary is bonded to tertiary carbon. If u take neopentane, it gives only one monochloro derivative because it has single type of H, all are primary.Hope u got it.
