If a salt is added to ice , the melting point of ice decreases . Reason : This is because of addition of non volatile solute salt which causes depression in the freezing point of water. Due to this water freezes at a lower temperature and thus ice starts melting at a faster rate.

Melting point of solid is the force of attraction between the molecules of the solid.
Addition of the non volatile salt results in the decrease in the freezing point of water.
Therefore, the water freezes at a lower temperature and leads to the melting of the ice at a very fast rate within a very short time span.
