Naphthalene is a fused ring compound and more reactive than benzene due to greater pi-electron density. Thus it is difficult to control regioselectivity and polyalkylation. Even monoalkylation may give a mixture of 1- and 2-alkylated naphthalene. These monoalkylated derivatives are more reactive than naphthalene (directing effect), thus favouring further alkylation. However bulky groups like tert-butyl may give 2-naphthalene as a major product. Also, application of low temperatures may overcome the poly-substitution problem.
