Syn expansion is the expansion of two substituents to a similar side (or face) of a twofold bond or triple bond, bringing about an abatement in bond arrange however an increment in number of substituents.
By and large the substrate will be an alkene or alkyne. A case of syn expansion would be the oxidation of an alkene to a diol by means of an appropriate oxidizing .
Hostile to expansion is in direct difference to syn expansion. In hostile to option, two substituents are added to inverse sides (or faces) of a twofold bond or triple bond, at the end of the day bringing about an abatement in bond arrange yet an expansion in number of substituents. The established case of this is bromination (any halogenation) of alkenes.
