There are lots of difference between benzaldehyde and formic acid. Benzaldehyde contains aldehyde group and formic acid contains carboxylic acid as well as aldehyde functional group. Reaction with NaHCO3, formic acid gives brisk effervescence while benzaldehyde won`t give this test. Further they can be distinguished by Fehling test. Benzaldehyde (aromatic aldehyde) do not give red ppt with Fehling solution but formic acid give positive test.
