when an aryl acid or aryl base is substituted at ortho position then ortho effect comes into effect. This effect is ot dependent on the nature of the substituent. thge reason for this is that the steric hinderence between the substituent and the neibouring carboxylate forces the carboxylate the bend out of the planeof the aremotic ring.
